Greetings from the NBC Counselling Department!

As a counselor new to the district in 2005, I am committed to building a counseling program that serves as a link between students, parents, and the school. I find this to be an exciting and effective partnership. I appreciate your being a part of it and would encourage your feedback at any time.

The services offered through the counseling department are intended to support and strengthen students' emotional, personal/social, and academic skills. There are a number of strategies that can be used to enhance these skills at school as well as at home. In saying so, there is a strong educational component to counseling through the sharing of information, techniques, and resources with all involved parties. I will work toward keeping abreast of current trends in counseling and in communicating these ideas. At any time that you have counseling related questions, do not hesitate to contact me. If I do not have the answer, I will either find it or connect you with someone who can provide you with an answer.

Some of the general areas of focus, in terms of students' emotional development and well-being, include familial changes counseling, crisis and/or grief counseling, stress management, anger management, adversity training, understanding feelings and self-actualization. Similarly, personal/social counseling addresses such areas as relationship skills, communications skills, problem solving, conflict resolution, assertiveness training, resistance skills, and character education. Academic counseling involves the scheduling of classes, academic assessment and advisement and study skills development, including test taking, organization, time management, and career awareness.

Likewise, a number of student opportunities and activities are sponsored through the counseling office. For example, leadership development seminars, career fairs, math and science conferences, community service projects, and various day camps to name just a few. We also offer student-led activities, such as student council, as well as student recognition opportunities. Ideally, we try to provide experiences and opportunities to meet each student's needs and interests. We like for all of our students to feel that they are an important part of our school.

I feel strongly that a comprehensive school counseling approach, in conjunction with a strong partnership with families, will provide a solid foundation for our students success. I am confident that our students will find that here.
